Stars Piercing the Night

Stars Piercing the Night (Akhtaran-e Shab-shekan) is a Persian poetry collection by Nader Hozhabri in which private emotion and public history continually meet. The poems often begin with an intimate voice, yet the world surrounding that voice is marked by repression, displacement, poverty, and war. Images drawn from nature carry much of this tension. Night suggests political darkness, while dawn becomes a promise that may be delayed but cannot be entirely erased. Birds, rivers, mountains, and flowering plants give the poems a landscape in which grief and resistance can speak to one another.

The collection does not remain solely within the language of protest. Love and separation are equally important, and moments of tenderness interrupt the harsher scenes. The beloved can become a refuge, just as memory can become a way of preserving what violence threatens to destroy. Even in the most desolate poems, the language searches for movement beyond despair. This gives the book a varied but coherent emotional character: it mourns damaged lives while continuing to imagine freedom, renewal, and human closeness.
