Backstreets of Grey

Backstreets of Grey is a collection of fourteen narrative and socially critical short stories by Nader Hozhabri. Its characters inhabit a world overshadowed by inherited beliefs and social inequality. Some stories explore family relationships, while others address exclusion, violence, and the struggle to preserve human dignity under difficult circumstances.

With a perceptive eye and an often satirical tone, the author questions religious certainties and structures of power. The book’s social criticism does not take the form of abstract argument. Instead, it emerges from encounters, conversations, and the lives of its characters. Humor and irony expose hidden contradictions without turning human suffering into an object of ridicule.

The stories unfold in a variety of social and cultural settings. They include an honor killing in London, life in a remote village in Iran, and an unconventional encounter with God. “Letters from the Heart,” a story composed of several letters and notes, offers a more intimate path into experiences that usually remain unspoken.

The stories unfold in a variety of social and cultural settings. The result is a polyphonic portrait of people moving through the gray alleys of life—people whose wounds are often inflicted by society, yet remain unnamed and concealed.
